Ooops!

T-shirt controversy is becoming quite a common theme here, it seems. Almost every week I come across a new one that has caused uproar for some reason or another. This time it’s a double whammy. Not just the one, but two t-shirts this time…..

And it’s two tees from Topman which have caused a massive furore this week with slogans that read a bit like a schoolboy with an illicit can of specialbrew came up with them. “Nice new Girlfriend. What breed is she?” says the writing on the front of the first shirt. Whilst the second explains “I didn’t mean to do it;  you provoked me, I was drunk, I was having a bad day, I hate you, I couldn’t help it, I didn’t mean it” together with some convenient little boxes for you to tick the appropriate excuse.

The first thing that struck me, on seeing these  t-shirts (which have now been pulled, by the way) was that if you were stupid enough to wear one down to a pub (half) full of women, you’d probably get what was coming to you. And not wear it again. And if you did wear it again then you deserve the same thing twice.

Because it’s Topman, however, and not an alternative site where bad tees and dodgy  humour are the norm, the outcry has been intense. A Twitter torrent of complaints directed at  #Stopman, ensured that one of Britain’s biggest retailers acted fast and withdrew the tees.

But even aside from the fact that the t-shirts are a bit sad anyway, it’s amazing  that such a big name as Topman didn’t even realise that the tees might be considered offensive. Although withdrawing them might be a bit excessive, don’t you think. I mean in a way, they might just serve as a warning; there’s nothing that says “I’m stupid”  and “Women are repelled by me” clearer than this.

I love this laugh out loud post club/ pub t-shirt by Topman. It taps perfectly into that “how  is your evening going to end” scenario which just happens all too often. This is nice, simple, funny and a definite boys t-shirt.

Even better is that it’s in the sale and is a mere snip at £7. Topman always has some great graphic and slogan t-shirt at a really good price and is always worth a look. It’s quite tempting to buy this for the boss for his next pool session, although it would look a bit more like this!

Quite Good, actually!

I have totally fallen in love with this very retro Frosties t-shirt by Topman. With it’s bright colours and it’s very crackly print, it looks like something you might have collected tokens for back in the early 80′s. Way back then, when I was little, Frosties were my favourite cereal. So amazingly versatile, they tasted fab even without milk, and were like sweet crisps; just how cool is that? I think it’s absolutely fine to be wearing a Frosties tribute t-shirt, nothing sad about it at all. This is a particularly fine number, and Topman’s prices are none too scary either. For a mere £22.00, you too can be Grr-reat!

Yotty Totty?

I loved the Topman t-shirt I posted on here just the other week with the slogan “Your tent or mine?” so appropriate for this seasons festival shenanigans, and yet how how how much more classy is this little number by Illustrated People at Topshop with the charming invitation “Your Yacht or Mine?” printed across the chest, with cutesome little heart and anchor motif.

Not only is the slogan tippity-top-tastic, but I love the cut of the sweatshirt. Raglan sleeves and totally vintage, slouchy style, it almost seems your yacht has been around for ages. Genius!

The only downside, I have to say, I’m not a big fan of the fabric mix; 50% polyester just isn’t done darling, but for 35 quid and the utter coolness of the top, I’ll give it a big thumbs up!

Glastonbury is well under way, with most of the revellers swimming in really gloopy mud, with all their gear crusted in the mud of a thousand wellies. Still, it’s all worth it, and with weather reports saying that the weekend is set to be hotter than ever, there’s always hope.

And if you get lucky, then this is THE t-shirt for you, a wonderfully humorous number from the ever inventive Topman. With the music blaring out from all the stages, it might just be easier to communicate by t-shirt. In fact, if you’re doing the festival circuit this summer, this might be the t-shirt you wear again and again. Do wash between festie’s though, or you might find yourself out in the cold!

Top Tee!

Going for a bit of a men’s nautical theme today, having found women’s stripes a-plenty. And where better to look than Topman, home to an ever changing selection of t-shirts, in various shapes and sizes. I particularly like the simplicity of this tee, just plain blue and white stripes on 100% cotton fabric with a round neck.

It definitely has that sort of retro, classic feel to it, and it perfect for this weather. Very Marlon Brando or James Dean. Best of all, it’s under 15 quid, which makes it an ideal summer number. With plenty of change left over for a nice pint of something refreshing!

The Boys!

The most amazing mother on earth, old Peggy Mitchell from Eastenders. Responsible for the toughest boys in London since the Krays, Peggy spawned the baddest and baldest dynasty TV has ever seen. Such a wee thing she was too!

I love this t-shirt, a postmodern ironic homage to the Mitchell brothers. All black and white and moody, the Mitchell bros at their menacing moodiest; this is by design company Two Bucks and available from t-shirt staple Topman. This is definitely the tee to be seen in down the pub playing pool, I think I shall mention it to the boss in time for his next match!

Who Cares!

I do like a t-shirt with a bit of attitude and this corker from Topman is right up my street. Topman have some of the best tees around, nicely priced and a huge range of different prints and styles, so you can always find something good.

I love this totally irreverent tee; always one of my stock phrases when someone asks me if I’ve done something. I am particularly enamoured of the print which is Wild West Wanted Poster in style. This is definitely on my shopping list, and at £16.00 you won’t need to rob the sheriff to buy it!

Top Man's Tee!

This t-shirt from Topman has got an amazing graphic print, and such a sense of perspective that you feel almost as if you are being drawn into the belly button. It looks as though it comes from an Art Deco poster advertising an art and music festival. I love the muted colours and the retro feel to the tee, whilst the stark lines and the modernist feel of the graphics give it an air of Bauhaus-era artwork. It’s yet anther great looking t-shirt from Topman, who keep churning out great prints and pretty favourable prices.

As long as you don’t tell anyone it came from Topman though. All those billions, and you would’ve though mega mogul and Topman ownerPhillip Green might splash a little out on finding a name that brings back the 80′s and the sound of Bros a little less strongly!

Top of the Tees!

Topman is a great place for finding interesting t-shirts. Not too pricey but with lots of quirks and character, and a great range of styles and prints. I sort of love this military style t-shirt, and I sort of don’t at the same time. Partly because it’s on trend, with the buttons, the colour of the t-shirt is good, and it’s a simple design.

On the other hand, it would only work if your tummy isn’t going to stretch apart those lower buttons and ruin the line of the thing. Also, the buttons are a bit nippley. On a cold day, it might just not look right. Military styling looks great on coats and cardigans, but I’m just not quite there with the t-shirt. Maybe I just need to give it some time. It might help as well, if you were offered a peek at what it looks like on, just to see where those buttons go.

Military is a big trend this autumn winter, so this t-shirt is a definite yes, or no, or maybe!
