No, no please don't take my picture!

Is the girl group dead? Or is the Saturdays living proof that girl domination is still possible. Way back in the last series of X Factor, manufactured girl group Belle Amie complained how much harder is was for girls. In groups. I have to say, it never stopped Girls Aloud, but maybe the era of the girl band is if not dead, not far off. That could be why the Saturdays never go a day without being in the paper. You can almost hear the whirr of their PR machine, as they appear yet again, all big hair and smiles, and little dresses from Topshop. The one that looks a bit like Sienna Miller is obviously their trump card, they keep photographing her. Maybe that’s why Rochelle is wearing a t-shirt that says “No Pictures”. It’s a bit of reverse psychology. Everyone’s going to take her photo now. Smart girl. Maybe they’ve got what it takes to go as far as the Spice Girls….watch out, they’ll be advertising crisps next.

Inspired by Forrest Gump

Last Exit to Nowhere is a t-shirt design company that has brought together a mixture of designers, photographers, artist and film enthusiasts. Their t-shirts are all inspired by popular films of various categories and the aim is to create an amazing range of tees, well made and with unique designs.

I love these t-shirts, they are all so inventive. Take a look at this one, inspired by the film Forrest Gump. Really good graphics combined with a well made t-shirt. Definitely worth checking these guys out.

With a lot of celebrity designers, you kind of get the feeling that maybe they aren’t doing all that much of the actual design work and are merely basking in the reflected glory that their famous name lends them. However sister team Sienna and Savannah Miller have beaten the critics by joining together both the celebrity name and the designer. Twenty8Twelve by S. Miller is a very crafty collaboration indeed. Savannah is the acclaimed, trained designer who has worked for big names like Alexander McQueen; Sienna the big celeb that gets the brand into stores Savannah alone would never manage to reach. They have been chugging away at their line for a few years now, and due to their dream combination, have produced some good looks. This t-shirt is a pretty funky number for summer, and a good price from online discount boutique, The Outnet. The tee has a good strong motif, mismatched panels and is a loose fit. Perfect for beach and festival wear this summer.

Can there be a single person in the entire country who wasn’t forced to read “Of Mice and Men” when they were at school? The American classic was considered so flipping classic that it was on GCSE reading lists for longer than I care to remember. Still, in terms of great contemporary literature, it’s up there with the best. And what about “Lord of the Flies”, “To Kill a Mockingbird” (aka, that book that Victoria Beckham got a name from), and “Catcher in the Rye”, possibly the most explosive book about teenage angst. Like EVER.

All of these greats, and many more, are threatening to become things of the past, with the odd dusty copy sitting on the bookshelf, if technology has its way. Now that more and more books being produced electronically, has the paperback had it’s day?An amazing t-shirt design company have had the most fabulous idea of putting the front covers of some of the most important works ever to be written onto t-shirts. Using the original or out of print artwork for books like “The Great Gatsby”, “Lolita” and “1984″, design heroes Out of Print have transferred some amazing front covers onto canvas (well, cotton) to be loved and worn in like your favourite book. Not only are they making some of the coolest t-shirts in town, but for every t-shirt sold they will donate a book to a community with limited resources via their partner, Books in Africa. I love every single one of these t-shirts, but what I need to do right now is dig out my well worn copy of Catch 22 and sit in a corner reading for a couple of hours.

I can’t imagine that anyone would particularly relish a spell at her Maj’s leisure. However if it were to happen, and if you had a top lawyer to get you off, oh and you didn’t do it in the first place etcetera etcetera, then this could well be the t-shirt you would be wearing for your mugshot. A classic  ”Go to Jail”  from family favourite, Monopoly. A masterpiece in the art of irony, it’s almost as if this chap was expecting to be arrested. Surely not!

Similarly, this man has uncannily anticipated how his day was going to turn out. A sense of foreboding, or just a seasoned criminal? Maybe it’s just never a good day for this kind of t-shirt; an “I am totally innocent” might be better?

Charliegh-tastic!

I love the soft colours and retro prints on the new Charliegh Co’s summer t-shirts collection. These are t-shirts which look like you’ve owned them forever, with soft muted tones and wonderful graphics, they are the perfect tees to go with you oldest rumpled jeans and an ice cold beer. On their website, they state that their influences include typography, iconic art and minimalism. Their tees showcase a range of really amazing prints, lots of retro styling and designs inspired by the Californian flag. Everything is printed on premium weight cotton and looks like it would last a long time.  A really good t-shirt company and well worth checking out.

Amongst the reams of indistinguishable mass produced pop music and X Factor tosh Amy Winehouse has always stood out as  an incredible talent, both vocally and in her songwriting. The news that she had died yesterday was hardly a surprise, but a huge tragedy nonetheless. Amy has been hailed the forerunner to a host of strong female vocals, such as Lady Gaga and Adele, and the amount of tributes pouring in to express condolences to her family is testament to her popularity.

Although Winehouse has been oft crisistcised for being a dreadful role model, I would beg to differ. Firstly, because she was a singer, not a moral crusader but also because she is a stark reminder to the attention seeking wannabes of how fame and wealth doesn’t always equate with happiness. Oh yeah, and that drugs are bad, of course.

So today’s t-shirt is one I showcased just a few weeks ago, brought out again for a little tribute to a truly fantastic singer. a musical icon with the best beehive in the business!

One of life’s little pleasures is coming across a really good t-shirt slogan, one that makes you laugh out loud. Here are just a few I thought I’d share with you…..

I love this one, and how many people would benefit from that piece of wisdom!

This is a fantastic t-shirt for any females who are more mad about their horses than anything or anyone else….

Another classic…

And possibly every male’s fantasy t-shirt, if only life were like this……well you can always dream, can’t you?

And finally, just for one last chuckle, how about this little number to brighten up your day….

Revolutionary!

In 2008, a crack commando unit parachuted into the Colombian jungle and negotiated the release of a number of hostages. Disguised as Marxist rebels, the government troops managed to persuade the kidnappers that they were members of The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FRAC), a group who routinely use kidnapping as a weapon against the government. Wearing Che Guevara t-shirts was part of their cunning plan to convince the guerrillas that they were on the same side, and they fiendishly masterminded the rescue of 15 hostages who had been held for the previous six years, including presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, who called the rescue “a miracle”.

So, if you have a problem, and if noone else can help you, maybe you can slip on a t-shirts, and be part of the Che Team!

Olympic T-shirt!

Golly, we are getting all patriotic these days. First there’s the Royal Wedding, with flags a-plenty, next up is the 2012 Olympics, where hopefully we’ll be able to prove to the rest of the world that we don’t just slob about eating chips and watching telly all day. Quite a tall order that one. Still, at least we can look sporty whilst scoffing our faces. Stella McCartney together with Adidas has been busy creating a range of leisurewear with an Olympic theme for budding sportsmen and women. Based on the movement of the elements of earth, air, fire and water, the range aims to combine Britishness with style and practicality, set off with an optimistic dash of gold. Quite a lot of gold, if you ask me. But maybe it’s best not to ask me.

McCartney has worked hard to get the balance just right, and she has come up with a good, solid range. Each piece has got the Team GB logo on it, and the prices are reasonable. This t-shirt has a good take on the Union Jack; great for running around in, or simply nipping to the fridge for another beer!
