Stars Wars!
I remember when the first Star Wars film came out when I was little. There were queues all the way up the street and it seemed the biggest thing ever to have hit the cinema screen. For months afterwards, every loo roll was pillaged to become a light-sabre and in the days before ebay, playground trade in action figures and other memorabilia was rife.
When I came across an article in the St Petersburg Times from 1977, it took me right back to that Christmas when all I wanted was an R2D2 that had special plastic plates you could hide inside it. Santa had an evil streak though, and I got a R2D2 bubble bath instead. Total dud.
Anyway, it is fascinating to see that in 1977, Star Wars t-shirts, especially ones with the face of Darth Vader were selling at a rate of one million a month. Stan Blum, who was in charge of the marketing company said of the Darth Vader tees “He’s the most sought after – he may even be bigger than Farrah Fawcett” It brings to mind an interesting image of all these Charlie’s Angels tees, suddenly ejected in favour of the dark and brooding evil emperor.
So here’s a corking vintage Star wars t-shirt. One that looks nice and authentic and will take you back to the time when real men used the force, and real princesses had doughnuts in their hair.

Vintage-tastic!
All Saints have turned draping into an art form. Sometimes I think they overdo it just a little bit; some items look a tad concertinaed rather than flowing in softly folds of jersey loveliness. However, they do produce some fine items, and are always worth a look. This one is a very fine vintage style boxy tee. Hence it’s name presumably; Vintage Tee. How marvellous. The t-shirt is an oversized boxy cut, designed to slide off the shoulder. the fabric has been given a so-called “dirty wash” (that sounds almost the same as unwashed, but never mind) with raw edges. Bear in mind that this doesn’t come cheap, it’s £50 which is a lot for a basic tee, but it’s so versatile it might just be worth checking out!

Joan Jett Tee!
There’s certainly something about music t-shirts. They’re not just items of clothing; they’re souvenirs, photographs, even old friends. Guardian columnist Alex Petridis describes how in his youth he “….treated them [his t-shirts] with the reverence some women afford haute couture.” Band t-shirts that take you back to your teenage years are to be highly treasured for the snapshots they afford you, and for the nostalgia they evoke. Petridis describes a wonderful website called My band t-shirts; an interactive blog site, where you can share your fondest, and funniest t-shirt memories.
What’s so great about this site is that page after page reads like t-shirt obituaries; so loving and poetic, and full of precious memories. Like this….
“[My] Joan Jett t shirt was bought in New York in 2000, from a suitably scuzzy rock shop, close to the corner drugstore on the back of the first New York Dolls t-shirt. This was at a time where Joan hadn’t been rediscovered by the post-irony generation, and t-shirts of her were hard to come by. I pounced on it like a starving man on bread. I nearly bought two, and I wish I had. In fact, please bury me in this.”
And this
“……..A pre-teen Iron Maiden Number Of The Beast tour shirt, bought at my second ever gig, Bristol Colston Hall 1982. To see it now, a rag in my Dad’s garage, used to mop up turps and paint spillages, it’s hard to imagine ever being so young, so naïve, so tiny”
Bands may come and go, your youth may fade, but a t-shirt? That can last forever. Well, unless your mum turns it into a duster!

Top Tee!
Going for a bit of a men’s nautical theme today, having found women’s stripes a-plenty. And where better to look than Topman, home to an ever changing selection of t-shirts, in various shapes and sizes. I particularly like the simplicity of this tee, just plain blue and white stripes on 100% cotton fabric with a round neck.
It definitely has that sort of retro, classic feel to it, and it perfect for this weather. Very Marlon Brando or James Dean. Best of all, it’s under 15 quid, which makes it an ideal summer number. With plenty of change left over for a nice pint of something refreshing!

American Idyll!
I do love a good old vintage tee. Especially the ones that have been hanging around since the 80′s and have so much sentimental value, they can never be thrown away. The girl in this picture is from the ‘Street Style’ section from Glamour magazine, who just happens to be a model, looks amazing with her vintage t-shirt, tiny shorts, shiny leather trousers and long woolly scarf. I particularly like the finishing touch of the braces with badges on, and of course the whole ensemble is finished off with a massive pair of Doc Martens.
Now, it has to be pointed out that this girl is a model, and is therefore probably going to look pretty good most, if not all, of the time. I think this is highly unfair, however, to be honest, who amongst us is going to want to read a feature called ‘Street Mingers’? Still, time to dig out your vintage tees and hope that you look at least a little bit like some kind of model!

LOL? ROFL more like!
It’s been the first really lovely sunny day here today at T-Shirt Studio, and the sweatshirts, jumpers and hoodies have come off and there is a show of bare arms (white), shirts (white) and t-shirts (er….could be whiter!)
Still, spring is in the air, and the tees are out in force. I love this printed number from the ever versatile and ground breaking Topshop. A really long, oversized t-shirt with roll up sleeves and a retro yet up to date LOL slogan printed on the front in a style reminiscent of Wham way, way back. Before we even knew George was gay and half the girls at school thought they were in with a chance. Although maybe there were signs.
This is a great, cheerful number with a definite sense of humour. A must have to put a bit of spring into your step!

NME TEE!
You can’t beat a good bit of Tee and Cake for an all round comfort t-shirt. I love this oversized tee featuring an old NME cove with the Sex Pistols and the Grateful Dead that ticks all the right boxes for perfect t-shirt categories; vintage, rock n’ roll, retro, British …….er and all the other boxes which I can’t think of right now, but they are definitely the right ones.
This is a great tee and is the perfect slouchy fit and length to start you off right now, when you need the extra length to keep you warm, but also the wonderful slouchiness and uber cool style which will see you well into the festival season.
My advice? Sit down and have yourself a nice nit of afternoon tee and cake. Delicious!

Top Man's Tee!
This t-shirt from Topman has got an amazing graphic print, and such a sense of perspective that you feel almost as if you are being drawn into the belly button. It looks as though it comes from an Art Deco poster advertising an art and music festival. I love the muted colours and the retro feel to the tee, whilst the stark lines and the modernist feel of the graphics give it an air of Bauhaus-era artwork. It’s yet anther great looking t-shirt from Topman, who keep churning out great prints and pretty favourable prices.
As long as you don’t tell anyone it came from Topman though. All those billions, and you would’ve though mega mogul and Topman ownerPhillip Green might splash a little out on finding a name that brings back the 80′s and the sound of Bros a little less strongly!

Giselle the gazelle
I have this theory that about 200 years in the future, all women will be genetically programmed to look like Giselle Bundchen. She has this look of bred to perfection about her, no matter what she is doing, and an Amazonian physique with strong bones and big hair; veritably the ultimate perfect gene mix. Weirdly (or maybe not so weirdly really) she has a twin, so maybe her dna is already trying to take over the world.
Her she is, looking beautifully dishevelled after a workout in a vintage v-neck t-shirt. I don’t know what there is to say about this one really, apart from roll on world domination!

Do you like me?
Shame on you, David Cameron for trying to like the Smiths. Please try and remember, you are a politician, and this makes you the lowest of the low when it comes to musical hipness and taste. Being a Tory and thus spawn of Thatcher, you are pretty low anyway, but this is a big mistake.
Johnny Marr recently took to his Twitter site to admonish Cameron for professing a liking his erstwhile band.”David Cameron, stop saying that you like the Smiths.” He tweeted excitedly. ” No you don’t, I forbid you to like it” Seems perfectly fair to me. I quite distinctly recall the devaluing of my love for sherbert lemons when the geeky kid at school professed a liking for them.
Never one to miss an opportunity, Morrissey has weighed into the argument, donating a long diatribe as to why David Cameron not be allowed to like The Smiths (something to do with huntin’, shootin’, and fishin’,”) all in all, a most humorous state of affairs. And quite appropriate that heads of state should never, NEVER be given the chance to try and prove their coolness.
So, a nice vintage Smiths t-shirt for today. Do you dare like it?
