Capitalism City!
One of life’s cruel little ironies must be that over in the States, some bright entrepreneurial souls are starting to sell Occupy Wall Street t-shirts, mugs and other merchandise emblazoned with the “Occupy” logo. Even the whole Occupy and 99% thingey is being trademarked. I can see the point of advertising the protest to raise awareness, however cashing in on the protest is kind of missing the point a bit, no?
Go and check out theoccupystore and take a look at capitalism at it’s most weasely, sheesh you can even customise your own Occupy t-shirt……how long before it takes on over in the UK do you think?

Taliban Ban?
Considering that British soldiers have been fighting the Taliban for the best part of ten years, you might think it not wholly inappropriate that there is the odd t-shirt about it. Not only in a show of support for our soldiers but also in the current affair genre thingey. Last week however, a market stall holder in Lincolnshire was asked to remove from sale t-shirt which read “Taliban Hunting Club” around a target with skull and guns, modern-day pirate style. People had been offended by the t-shirt, which was duly withdrawn. The stall holder, whilst compliant, wondered why and how many people might offended by the t-shirt, and opened a Facebook debate to discuss the issue.
The great question is whether with such a sensitive issue, commercial merchandise is lacking in taste. So, would you ban the Taliban, or would you let the hunt go on?

Free t-shirts handed out at a right wing rock concert in Gera in Germany gave the wearers a bit of a shock when they were later washed. On the surface of it, some 250 t-shirts handed out by an anonymous donor, had a typical right wing slogan (Hardcore rebels, national and free”), but upon washing, the first layer of ink dissolved to leave a stark message from an organisation called “Exit Deutschland”. The group aims to encourage and help Neo Nazis escape from the hard line right wing extremist groups. The newly washed and slightly more tolerant t-shirts would display the message “Whatever your t-shirt can do, you can do too” along with contact information for the group, which claims to have helped 400 disassociate themselves from the far right to date. The ink on the t-shirts was developed only to dissolve in detergent, so that if it rained, the t-shirts wouldn’t ruin the surprise.
Needless to say, organisers of the concert were mightily miffed about the scam, but Bernd Wagner, founder of Exit was delighted with the outcome. Their hope of raising awareness of the group certainly succeeded. I don’t expect many of the t-shirts made it though!

Bad Bush!
I wonder what Geroge W Bush is up to these days. Having been Obama-d out of politics, he’s probably doing the rounds of the public speaking circuit and making mega squillions……almost as much as the debt he saddled the rest of the States with. But not quite.
I read in a news archive somewhere about an Australian man chucked off a flight to Oz because he was wearing a t-shirt which read “World’s Number One Terrorist” together with a picture of Bush. The reason he was wearing it, he maintained, was that he was defending his freedom of speech. The reason he was kicked off the flight, said the airline, was that he might frighten the other passengers. Quite right too. Flying is scary enough, without someone wearing a t-shirt that has the “t” word printed across it. The same chap kept on trying to get on aeroplanes wearing the t-shirt, until in the end they threatened to chuck him out of Australia as a whole.
There used to be a lovely range of Bush t-shirts. The “Good Bush. Bad Bush” one was very popular for a while. But here’s a lovely one, documenting Bush’s acronym, The War Against Terror. Well, he was, wasn’t he?

Going.....going....gone yet?
Whilst I’m not totally in favour of mob mentality, I can’t help but confess that I’ve been glued to the Twitter feed about the News of the World hacking scandal all flippin’ day, and am fervently hoping that Murdoch’s whole empire comes crashing down around his ears. All in all it’s a very strange day. Hugh Grant, famous for playing foppish Englishmen, is putting on an Oscar worthy performance as Rupert Murdoch’s nemesis, the final shuttle is launching, there is torrential rain in July, and Pat Butcher is leaving Eastenders. Possibly the saddest thing about it all is that the awful situation in Sudan is being totally ignored in the face of the revelations pouring out in the wake of the NOTW scandal.
Still, I can’t forgo the excuse to put the topical “red top2 joke onto a t-shirt, so here we go. Should we send these out to all the NOTW that have been fired?

Trash!
Following a furious night of news and protests, the spawn of Murdoch made the shock announcement today that the huge media group would be axing the News of the World with the last edition of the paper to be produced this Sunday. To be honest, with the huge amount of big name advertisers pulling out of the toxic paper, and others being harassed until they follow suit, the NOTW has become a complete liability. In a drastic manoeuvre to stop the parent company suffering any more damage, they have behaved a bit like a spider stuck down a plughole, biting off one of it’s many legs to crawl back out of the drainpipe.
Coincidentally however, a merger with the Sun has been on the cards for some time (apparently the domain name thesunonsunday.co.uk was registered two days ago)So is it more of a re-branding rather than a jettisoning the liability that has become the NOTW? How convenient.
I wonder if it will be enough though? Rebekah Brooks’ blood is being called for by everyone but Murdoch himself, and whilst getting rid of the paper looks decisive it smacks of desperation. So, here they are today on their very own highly topical t-shirt. Try designing your own, this one’s going to run and run.

Don't Tweet your Meat!
Another victim (?) of the force of social media is Anthony Weiner, the US Representative for New York’s 9th congressional district who was recently caught in one of the biggest sexting scandals to hit America. Weiner got a bit carried away in sending scantily clad snaps of himself to followers on Twitter and other social media sites. After initially denying photographs sent to his followers were of himself in his white boxers with a tell tale bulge, he then publicly backtracked, admitting not only were all the pictures of him, but that he had been in “six inappropriate relationships over the past three years”. And his wife is pregnant. Yowzer. Is everyone trying to outdo Tiger Woods, and there’s some sort of competition we don’t know about?
Mr Weiner’s fame is growing as fast as his……..er……..it’s growing really fast. Not only are t-shirts selling like hot cakes with various slogans “Don’t Tweet your Meat” and photos of the man himself with his Twitter hashtag underneath. The market is also flooded with anatomically correct dolls. The $39.95 standard Anthony Weiner Action figure features a buff looking doll in gym clothes with a “Tweet This” patch on his slightly-bulging white bottoms. Oh well, if his political career flounders he’s always got a future as a t-shirt retailer.

A joke too far?
Possibly, and only possibly, enough time has gone past for it to be socially acceptable to wear a Genghis Khan t-shirt with one of his more famous quotes such as “It is not sufficient that I succeed, all others must fail.” or some other declaration of his less than puppy-like personality, perhapsyou could make up your own Kahn-esque slogan “Are you a Genghis Kahn or are you a Genghis Kahn’t?” (ever see the Mexican?). Try it with anyone more recent, however, and you may find your t-shirts are less than welcome.
This is what happened to a t-shirt company in Australia, called Red Bubble, who were marketing the t-shirts of Hipster Hitler. The designers came up with some choice slogans which were way, way off the scale in terms of national sensitivity. Things like “Back to the Fuhrer” and “Three Reichs and you’re out” were deemed so offensive by the Jewish community, the t-shirts were taken off sale pronto. Er….not really surprising is it?
So, watch out. If you go to a land down under, just make sure you don’t get banned down under!

Game Over
The news that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by American forces was met with mixed reactions around the world. Whilst Obama’s counter terrorism adviser, John Brennen said it was “one of the gutsiest calls by any president in recent memory”, others were more sceptical, with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams saying it left him with an “uncomfortable feeling” at the way it had been handled.
Within hours, however, t-shirts proclaiming the death of the Al Qaeda leader were being printed in their masses. Various slogans were available in the States, including such gems as “Osama got Obama’d”, “Dead LOL” and “Ding dong Osama’s dead”.
There’s nothing quite like a controversial tee, is there? Me, I’d leave this can of worms alone, and go for the new and spectacular X Factor scandal. Was Cheryl really fired? or was it a fiX?

Is that Bruce Springsteen?
The whisperings that surrounded President Obama’s birthplace prompted him eventually to publicise a copy of his birth certificate, stating that he was born in the U.S. state of Hawaii in 1961. The anti Obama campaigners had been branding his presidency illegal on the back of allegations that he is not a natural U.S. citizen. However, with the whisperings refusing to go away, an increasingly irritated Obama said there was no way he could walk around with his birth certificate plastered on his forehead. The solution, according to his deputy campaign manager was to have copies of the extended birth certificate printed onto mugs and t-shirts for his supporters to wear. The t-shirts feature the slogan “Born in the USA” and are a light-hearted response to a long spate of Obama bashing.
Cynics have branded it a PR exercise, asking why did he cover up his origins for so long, and why did he spend so much money refusing to let the certificate be seen in the first place.
As far as conspiracy theories go, it’s not really up there with the whole fake moon landings, is it? Still, it’s a great way to refute an allegation. T-shirt for Ryan Giggs, anyone?
