Faked!

If there’s one place to go to for real quality at bonkers prices, it’s Net-a-Porter, or it’s male version, Mr Porter. One of those places to scroll through wistfully, as the price tags are akin to most people’s wage slips.

There is however, a blast of good fortune on the horizon. The sale is on, and those items that were previously out of reach are now accessible but going fast. So if you’re really quick, there are some amazing bargains, although expect to see things vanish before your very eyes, as every other online shopper goes grab happy. who cares about the economy when prices are this good? (gulp!)

I love this t-shirt by Ksubi, it was a whopping £75 but now down to a very jolly £21. Worth a look, but be quick, be very very quick!

Bats!

Designers Zoe and Quince (such a cool name) Karssen produce a phenomenally successful range of vintage style, tongue in cheek t-shirts for “The cool girls in town”, under the name Zoe Karssen. Although the label was only founded a year ago, already they have made it onto the Net-a-Porter website, a sure sign of cult selling success. Next stop…..the world?

The t-shirts are slouchy, made from a wonderful blend of semi sheer cotton and modal and have a much more laid back feel than other popular retro label Wildfox Couture. I love how the motif is printed on the interior of the t-shirt to give it a really faded look. These t-shirts are selling like hot cakes, and are a snip at £55, so grab one now before they all fly away.

Zebra Tank!

Another fabulous tee to take you all through the summer from style-tastic Net-a-Porter. A bold zebra pattern that needs very little dressing up, with a great length and good fit, and a nice variation on the stripes theme. From Alice by Temperley it has style oozing from every pore (do tank tops have pores?). This is a really easy top to wear and doesn’t need much thinking about; great for this sort of weather as it means you have more time sipping something delightful!

Animal prints are still massively fashionable, so buy this one now and wear it until the cows (or the zebras) come home!

Victoria Beckham dress in a tee!

Hunting through Net-a-Porter for an ultimate summer tee, I came across this amazing top by Alice + Olivia. Featuring bold black and white stripes, a fitted peplum shape and a very Victoria Beckham style zip all the way down the back, this is a perfect summer holiday tee. Instantly giving class and evening glamour to a tight pencil skirt or skinny jeans, this is the kind of wardrobe staple you can’t live without. I love how you can get the whole fitted dress look without having to spend thousands, and being jersey….no ironing…hooray!

Of course, you do have to bear in mind that as this beautiful t-shirt costs nearly 200 pounds, it’s probably a large chunk of your holiday budget, but hey! You’ll look fantastic, even if you have to stay at home!

Definitely not a polo shirt.

I discovered this lovely brand of polo shirt on Net-a-Porter’s sister (or should that be brother?) site, Mr Porter. “This is not a Polo Shirt” manufacture a great range of  polo shirts actually, so I don’t know why they’re so strenuously pretending that they’re not polo shirts. But maybe it’s a bit of an ironic homage to Magritte and Anya Hindmarch (although not necessarily in that order!). The brand is an offshoot from fashion mavericks Band of Outsiders, so it’s likely that there’s some really deep thinking going on there somewhere.

Anyway, this a really good retro stripe polo shirt, 100% cotton, as you would expect and nice detailing and buttons. It does come in at £135, so what you might well be thinking is “This is not a polo shirt I can afford” in which case the title makes sense. Still, if this is the polo shirt for you, then it is not merely a polo shirt,it’s a phone bill, two tanks of petrol, a train fare to somewhere remote. Yeah, just buy the shirt!

Net-a-Porter is the fashion Mecca for all women of certain standards and aspirations. Full of the latest fads and trends, it has become a giant success. So, hardly surprising that it would branch out into menswear and give poor hapless men the sort of closet envy that women have been suffering since fashion began.

Net-a-Porter for men is called Mr Porter. If the name seems to lack a little imagination, you do at least get the idea. But will men get the concept? Writer AA Gill had a go at in in the Sunday Times this weekend, and the result was a sort of knitted James Bond with space boots look. I think he was confused by the range, but maybe he was being deliberately obtuse.

Flower Power!

As with it’s sister company, Mr Porter is fantastic to give you a wide range of key designer pieces, and to show emerging trends. Normal people can’t afford to stock their entire wardrobe from the online warehouse you’d like to be stuck in, but you can browse to your hearts content.

Here’s a bold t-shirt to be worn by the more fashion forward amongst us. A Jil Sander number, it’s the kind of thing you can imagine Tom Ford getting Colin Firth to wear. Getting him more in touch with his feminine side and that kind of thing. At £265, you’d probably have to be an Oscar winner to be able to buy this, but never fear, Aubin and Wills are here too, as is James Perse and Rick Owens. Have a look and see if you think it is likely to be a Mecca for men too!

Spellbound!

I just came across this gorgeous Markus Lupfer t-shirt on the beautiful Net-a-Porter and thought what a lovely slogan it is, and worthy of comment for it’s sheer sweetness and delightfulness. And then I saw the price.

At a staggering one hundred and forty quid you might imagine you’d have be a bit spellbound if you were to buy this t-shirt, stunning thought it is. A lovely drapey style, with the wording written out in the shiniest of sequins, 100% cotton and elbow length sleeves, it really is a magical t-shirt.

If you want to buy this sort of thing however, you do need to conjure up a couple of zeros onto the end of your bank balance. Lovely indeed, but the price is no fairytale!

Beaver Diva!

I just love the sales at Net-a-Porter. Some of the biggest discounts around, and I STILL can’t afford even a finger bit of a fingerless glove. Which they probably don’t sell anyway, being far too stylish for such things. (Net-a-Porter, I mean, not the gloves). Still, I love browsing through their online sales rack, and taking a peep at what I would be buying, if mega squillions meant nothing to me.

Possibly the finest coat ever has to be this squirrel/beaver combo by Fendi. With over 50% off, the price has gone totally nuts (sorry) and is now only £3,500 from a snuggly £7,000. Not only is it a beautiful jacket, the whole squirrel/beaver combo sounds like a particularly tasty cajun burger, and is making my tummy rumble. How amazing is that.

This is definitely the most beautiful investment coat, one to squirrel away, perfect for a bit of beaver diva fever!

Birthday Booty!

Birthday Booty!

I only discovered today that the fabulous Net-a-Porter is 10 years old and has had a suitably star studded bash to celebrate. Net-a-Porter is the most marvellous website for those who can afford it, and it was thus very fitting that top designers like Roland Mouret and Christopher Bailey came from all over the world to celebrate. And Victoria Beckham. VB’s show stealing announcement of the evening was that she was really a gay man, the woman’s body being just a mistake (and a bit of plastic). I did, however award her about a hundred brownie points for reaffirming that she was never ever going to sing again (did she ever in the first place though?), saying ‘Let’s face the music, I wasn’t the best singer… I can’t say music is my passion.’ Wow, well done Victoria. The next thing we know, she’ll be papped eating a burger!

Anyway, instead of one of those squiffily expensive t-shirts I was going to regale you with. I thought I should pay homage to perhaps the most beautiful item on Net-a-Porter. Christian Louboutin’s incredibly long Babel boots, a snip at £995. Surely a work of art, and deserving of a minutes silence before we blow out the candles and sing Happy Birthday!

Triumph or disaster?

Triumph or disaster?

Sometimes, I will flick through the money sinking machine that is known as Net-a-Porter, idly wondering who has two thousand pounds to spend on a scrap of cloth, and other times I will gasp astounded at the skill of great designers, and their sheer brilliance with shape, cut and other important stylistic things. Occasionally however, I am stopped dead in my tracks, which instantly calls for a cup of coffee to start me up again. This t-shirt, named “Bird” by Juicy Couture is one of those startled, rabbit in the headlights moments. I am truly flummoxed. Is this a genius piece of fine tailoring, featuring asymmetrical sleeves and hemline and an atmospheric abstract print. Or is it just my dad’s old t-shirt that my mum splattered paint on when she was decorating? I’m sure it’s all very postmodern, this dual aspect t-shirt slash decorating disaster, but I’m not sure if 115 pounds isn’t rather a lot to pay for such polar ambiguity. But maybe therein lies my problem. If I have to ask, I will never understand. Shucks!
