I was just checking out a few band tees, post Brits and all that, when I came across this little Rasputin corker by American metal band Mastodon. I have never heard of Mastadon, although from the t-shirt and the name I am inferring that they are pretty headbang-ey and make ZZ Top look like Jessie J (a quick search on YouTube confirms this)

Still, as a t-shirt it’s in a league of it’s own. It screams “I’m really weird” at the top of its sartorial voice and for that reason alone it’s gets top billing as today’s t-shirt. Not that I think you should wear it or anything, it’s far too weird.

At the risk of being overly flippant, singing doesn’t seem to be a healthy career prospect these days, does it? Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston are all recent tragedies who have passed away far too early; it does make you wonder if it’s all it’s cracked up to be, that fame lark.

Anyway, here is a t-shirt of Whitney Houston on tour. A nice reminder of how smiley she once was in the good old days when she used to drive everyone mad with that song from the Bodyguard which went on and on and on. Although to be fair, anything to shut Kevin Costner up. Nice one, Whitney!

The Saturday’s are a girl band, and there is one who looks a bit like Sienna Miller, and that is why they are famous. The one who looks like Sienna is called Mollie King. I’m not sure if she is as annoying, but it probably comes close. Still, the Saturdays are very popular, even if noone knows what they do. When I say noone knows, I think I mean noone cares. Not true; I expect people do care, but they are little people who are under the age of about 10, which is the target audience for most pop stars these days. And yes, I am feeling very old today. I was at least 14 when I discovered U2 (I have since “undiscovered” them, you’ll be glad to know).

Anyway, I quite like this tee that young Millie or is it Mollie  is wearing with a few tears and the slogan “Dirty Blonde”. It has that dual meaning which lifts it a little out of the “girl in t-shirt” category to the upper realms of “quite nice looking girl in funny t-shirt”. I think this is progress.

Big news today is that Mickey Mouse has hijacked Joy Division’s beautiful (if a little weird) artwork from their  ”Unknown Pleasures” album. Naughty little rodent. Anyway, Joy Division purists are up in arms at the alleged theft at the pinching of their special wiggly lines, and drummer Stephen Morris has weighed into the argument saying “I was quite angry when I first saw it. No one asked us. They’re trading off the band and our album cover. I don’t like the design at all. It’s horrible.” And indeed he has a point. What’s Mickey doing looking all pimply?

Originally, the blurb on the Disney tee gave reference to it’s inspiration, stating that”…..inspired by the iconic sleeve of Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ album, this Waves Mickey Mouse Tee incorporates Mickey’s image within the graphic of the pulse of a star. That’s appropriate given few stars have made bigger waves than Mickey!”  however, this  has now been removed from the website, as too many grumpy fans complained, presumably. And maybe they thought it would be better all round if they didn’t draw attention to the ripped  offness of the design.

The t-shirts have now sold out, making Disney very joyful indeed. They might be taking the Mickey is it a joyful decision?

After naughty minx Rihanna performed on the X Factor with rude words on her shoes, I was dying to read what was printed on her t-shirt at the Jingle Bell Ball. Her cut off tee features a long piece of writing with DANGER scrawled across the top in red. Rihanna just doesn’t do subtle and demure so I’m guessing it’s something pretty saucy.  A great twist on the slogan tee, as it’s one of those ones that everyone wants to read, but the writing is just a little bit too small.

The End of the World as We Know It

R.E.M.’s “Everybody hurts” is pretty much the chief anthem for angst ridden teenagers. Luckily it’s counteracted by “Shiny Happy People” a jump around and dance on the table song. The news that R.E.M. have announced their split came yesterday along with the sage words of Michael Stipes that “A wise man once said ‘The skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave” What with all the ageing rockers around doing comeback tour upon comeback tour, saving the rainforest and frolicking with teenagers when they’re as wrinkly as Nora Batty’s stockings, this strikes me as a remarkably dignified exit. Unless they’re planning a reunion tour.

Music-wise, I can’t actually recall anything after “Automatic for the People”, hence today’s tribute t-shirt is probably what you’d consider to be vintage. So RIP REM, long may you live off your royalties.

Justin Bieber is the sweet and fresh faced pop star from Canada who could do absolutely no wrong. Until now, that is. After being recently spotted wearing a rude t-shirt, fans and grown ups around the world were horrified that the mini icon not only knows bad words, but is wearing them too. The words, taken from a Cee Lo Green song, say “F**k you and f**k her too!”, hardly the stuff of role models. But Bieber is in this in between stage, where he’s not a baby faced boy anymore, but kids are still listening to his music. It’s quite understandable that he wants to do a bit of rebellion, but surely he could be a bit more subtle about it; maybe some nice seedy bars and a bit of drugs and prostitution would help. This would then pave the way for a couple of DUI’s, complete with mugshots, a bit of theft and rehab a la Lohan. Wham bam, Bieber grows into a bona fide troubled star, and the t-shirt would go almost completely unnoticed. A bit of self destruction as the perfect distraction!

Amongst the reams of indistinguishable mass produced pop music and X Factor tosh Amy Winehouse has always stood out as  an incredible talent, both vocally and in her songwriting. The news that she had died yesterday was hardly a surprise, but a huge tragedy nonetheless. Amy has been hailed the forerunner to a host of strong female vocals, such as Lady Gaga and Adele, and the amount of tributes pouring in to express condolences to her family is testament to her popularity.

Although Winehouse has been oft crisistcised for being a dreadful role model, I would beg to differ. Firstly, because she was a singer, not a moral crusader but also because she is a stark reminder to the attention seeking wannabes of how fame and wealth doesn’t always equate with happiness. Oh yeah, and that drugs are bad, of course.

So today’s t-shirt is one I showcased just a few weeks ago, brought out again for a little tribute to a truly fantastic singer. a musical icon with the best beehive in the business!

Chargin!

Hardcore festival goers are gearing up for Glastonbury which starts this weekend. Already some of the early birds are stomping around in the mud, getting ready for the big kick off. The weather is due to be changeable, as usual, so make sure your festival wear is sturdy and rainproof.

One of the more ingenious items being introduced to the crowd this year is Orange’s sound Charge t-shirt.  By changing the vibrations from the music on-stage into electric charge, this state of the art tee will keep your mobile going all weekend. The fabric of the shirt is manufactured with Piezoelectric film, which acts as a giant microphone for sound. This is converted into enough energy to charge two mobile phones or one smartphone.

Honestly, the idea is fantastic, but if I were you, I’d get your friend to wear the t-shirt, and let them charge your phone. Innovative, definitely, but stylish it ain’t!

Amy Winehouse's Warning!

Saturday’s slightly unusual performance in the Serbian capital of Belgrade by Amy Winehouse  has been shown around the world. Although her management had banned alcohol from all her tour venues, she had evidently found her way into a hotel mini bar that wasn’t locked and done damage to quite a few miniatures. Or maybe she had smoked the little bars of complimentary soap. Whatever. She most definitely wasn’t at her most fabulous, which is pretty fabulous, to be fair. She was more like a pissed person being dragged up to do some karaoke Amy Winehouse number that she didn’t know the words to. Happens to the best of us I’m sure. Although, not being Amy Winehouse actually lessens the expectations. Amy is however at least expected to know the words to her songs. She has now cancelled the rest of her tour dates and will not be accepting payment for the concert.

A lovely little Amy t-shirt caught my eye, which maybe her ideal tee for today. Featuring the songwords “I told you I was trouble”, it seems fairly appropriate. It’s not like she didn’t warn us now, is it!
